La mostra Heav·en esamina l'idea di “cielo”. Cielo, in inglese Heaven/sky, è il termine con cui in italiano viene definita l'atmosfera della Terra. Il cielo ha assunto nel corso dei secoli diverse definizioni: sfera celeste, volta celeste, Paradiso, Etere.

“Esso è la sede delle divinità oppure una divinità stessa; talvolta il cielo stesso presta alla divinità stessa alcuni suoi attributi. Presso i popoli primitivi la divinità celeste s'identifica in genere con quella suprema, mentre quella sotterranea, ctonia, ne è in qualche modo nemica o contrapposta. Fin dall'antichità quindi il cielo era il luogo della trascendenza; vasto e sconfinato, dava l’idea dell’immensità di spazio, dell’universalità di pensiero, della pienezza del sentimento, della dolcezza e della grazia, della beatitudine. Le prime divinità furono quelle del cielo (come ad esempio il dio dei tuoni o Zeus)” – Wikipedia.

Heav·en raccoglie tramite una selezione di video le rappresentazioni di “cielo” di artisti di differenti nazionalità, religione e background.

Cieli che sono solo sfondo di attimi di vita quotidiana, immortalati da scatti di fotocamera, si sovrappongono a centinaia per scandire la pragmatica evoluzione individuale dell’autore di ‘1981-2001’. Il cielo qui non è entità straordinaria al quale ascendere, ma ordinario complemento armonico della vita di tutti i giorni. Come nel video di Teppei Koseki, in ‘The fall’, il soggetto principale è la crescita individuale. Il protagonista muta in maniera surreale, onirica e grottesca. Il Dio Mano/deus ex machina innesca una catena di eventi che culmineranno in un cinico epilogo al quali i soggetti del film sembrano incapaci di sottrarsi, nonostante la loro volontà individuale.

‘Another day in paradise’ descrive in maniera intimista e delicatamente casalinga la conquista dei nuovi orizzonti, quelli marziani. La descrizione dei nuovi pionieri e del loro training è giustapposta alla semplicità dei gesti dei giorni del paradiso.

Il paradiso terrestre (o inferno in terra, l’autore lascia la decisione allo spettatore) è descritto con consumista ed impersonale grafica 3d in ‘Song of Joy’. Il paese dei balocchi richiede ai suoi visitatori un’epica traversata a nuoto per essere raggiunto. La ricompensa per loro è un’eternità di divertimenti distorti in totale anonimato.

Se i colletti bianchi di Tian Xiaolei sembrano trovare conforto in un finale con twist romantico (letteralmente), i passeggeri della ‘Scala mobile’ di Ronci sembrano condannati ad un destino di inconsapevolezza. I viaggiatori sono colti impotenti, immobili ma in moto. La Scala Mobile sembra premiare e punire con moto ascensionale e discendente, persone di ogni estrazione sociale, genere ed età. La scala diventa ineluttabile fato, destinato a ripetersi infinitamente nelle sue molteplici rifrazioni. I passeggeri, come meduse in preda a correnti forti, non possono cambiare le proprie sorti. I passeggeri nemmeno sanno di essere intrappolati in un binario fisso.

La scala è Giudizio Universale Casuale e ci racconta storie di eterni ritorni di icone da slot machine.

Esagramma 23, Sgretolamento - I Ching. Nel video di Xiaodi la naturale entropia delle cose terrene è compensata dall’ultraterreno: da monaci in veste da parata; da Golgota di incensi; da statuette di Buddha; dalla “misericordia di Dio”, come si legge dietro alla colomba nella scena di apertura. Le prigioni terrestri sono trascese dalla fede taoista e buddista. L’umano, l’animale e il cosmo sono sublimati nell’ultraterreno e nella loro innata multiforme immanenza.

“Deus sive Natura”. Siamo circondati da Dio. Attimi di chimica immanenza, visti con il giusto sguardo e sottolineati da sottofondo intermittente di musica da camera, diventano meravigliosamente trascendenti in ‘The eve’.

‘The sign’ ritrae astrattamente panorami notturni, fasi lunari, fluttuanti sorgenti luminose.

Il cielo notturno è pulsante di suoni: ronzii di centrali elettriche, viaggi spaziali, correnti cosmiche. “Il segno”, bianco su nero, diventa intimista promessa extra-terrestre di altro diverso da noi oltre la volta celeste.

La mostra si propone come indagine contemporanea di spiritualità allargata, non limitata ai confini nazionali, ma unita sotto il medesimo cielo che si fa legame unificante e soggetto accomunante.

Heaven propone un percorso narrativo circolare, che crea una storia aperta allacciando i video in ordine predeterminato.

La scelta della chiesa come luogo per l’esibizione non è casuale.

La chiesa si pone idealmente come cornice storicizzante ed a suo modo installativa. La chiesa rappresenta “la casa di Dio” in terra, la casa di un Dio che ha come sua dimora i cieli. La chiesa che con i suoi campanili aspira ed inspira al cielo è cielo stesso sulla terra.

La chiesa compie appieno la sua triplice funzione di cielo teologico, di connessione architettonica al cielo fisico e di rappresentazione immaginifica di cielo tramite i dipinti che classicamente ne decorano i soffitti.

La mostra, riallacciandosi alla tradizione di cieli affrescati in grado di concretizzare preghiere e pensieri di generazioni di fedeli, propone nuove e contemporanee vedute dell'ultraterreno.

Il cielo è il cielo

Che cosa è il cielo? Il cielo sopra di noi? Il paradiso dopo la nostra vita? È l'utopia che non riusciremo mai a raggiungere? O è il nostro sogno? Come un migliaio di lettori hanno un migliaio di Amleto, ognuno ha il proprio cielo. Non importa se è bene o male, il cielo è per me solo un posto per riposare la mia anima. E per gli artisti, diventa un mondo che creano. Diversi artisti hanno immaginato e creato diverse Cieli.

Il Cielo è una Società dei consumi

C'è una canzone sacra in sottofondo, e gli uomini stanno correndo verso l'isola di Citera. Il video è pieno di fuochi d'artificio modellati in 3D, il parco dei divertimenti, le luci colorate, le risate di uomini e donne, attrazioni fatte di corpi umani. Le figure umane nel video sono tutti gli uomini con i capelli corti, in completi neri, non hanno occhi, e sono tutti uguali. In questo mondo falso, tutte le cose sembrano irreali e strane, come ad esempio gli scheletri, gli uomini con numerose braccia e gambe, i fiori di diamanti fatti di corpi femminili, e c'è addirittura un uomo che rimette oggetti d'oro. Il peso di un leone di pietra cinese dorato ed il cane di Jeff Koons fanno quasi crollare un uomo. Alla fine, il bacio tra una coppia mi ricorda la scultura di Rodin. Il gesto di baciare non è mai cambiato, cosa è cambiato è l'amore. Sembra che l'amore nella società dei consumi diventi distorto. Il Cielo Tian Xiaolei ha creato nel suo video Song of Joy, è una società dei consumi, in cui le risorse, tempo e sentimenti umani sono sprecati e distrutti. Il rumore del tuono sta cercando di svegliarci dalla falsa felicità fatta di consumi. È un paradiso dal quale dobbiamo scappare per trovare di nuovo noi stessi.

Il cielo è la realtà in cui avere la libertà

All'inizio di Esagramma Po, di Zhang Xiaodi, due candele rosse stanno bruciando e poi una immagine dell’Esagramma dei I Ching appare. La telecamera poi, riprende un uccello appollaiato su una lampada, dietro al quale c’è una targa con i caratteri cinesi "Tian En" (la misericordia di Dio). Improvvisamente il suono di un tamburo comincia accompagnato dal canto di alcuni preti taoisti. In questo video, l'artista monta un collage di immagini differenti della realtà. Ci sono riferimenti religiosi, come ad esempio il gruppo di preti taoisti, gli incensi nel tempio, la figura di Buddha, la maschera di giada e così via. E ci sono animali come gli uccelli, il pavone, le due capre da combattimento, l’orso in gabbia, la zebra, il cammello e via proseguendo. La cosa interessante è che l'artista fonde tutte queste cose insieme. Se si presta particolare attenzione, si noterà che tutti gli animali, tranne gli uccelli sono in gabbia o all'interno di recinzioni. Questo illustra che gli uccelli con le loro ali hanno la libertà di volare verso il cielo e possono raggiungere il Paradiso, ma gli animali senza ali sono limitati alla terra e non hanno libertà alcuna. Ecco che arriva il vento, attraverso i boschi, una porta e una finestra. È il vento che ci sprigiona, che ci invita a trovare un Cielo di libertà.

Il cielo è dove ci si alza

The Fall è stato interamente dipinto dall’autore, Ding Ning, in ogni sua immagine. In principio, la mano di Dio mette una sedia bianca su una sedia rossa, poi mette sulla sedia un uomo blu e una donna rosa senza braccia e un bambino bianco con una sola gamba sola e senza braccia. Improvvisamente tutto comincia a cadere. La figura bianca cade nell’antro di un modellino di edificio e si frantuma. Una volta a terra, si riprende. L'edificio è come una Babele dove gli esseri umani aspirano in continuazione al Cielo. La struttura è come un Panopticon di Bantham, in cui il bambino è come un prigioniero confinato in anelli di celle, circondato dai genitori guardia, che si celano in alto al centro. Mentre il bambino sta facendo tutto il possibile per salire le scale, le figure genitoriali sbirciano e vorrebbero disperatamente tenerlo sotto il loro controllo. Quando le scale finiscono, il bambino è addirittura costretto a crescere un paio di ali di farfalla. Al fine di fermare il bambino dall’uscire dal palazzo, la donna comincia a piangere e le lacrime allagano la costruzione fino ad annegare il bambino, il che mi ricorda il mito del Diluvio che Noè ha faticato a sopravvivere. Il bambino a questo punto, viene mangiato da un fiore cresciuto dalla mano di Dio, diventando così parte di essa e diventando in grado di superare i suoi limiti. Ciò che la esile figura bianca del bambino vuole dirci è di continuare a provare, fino a scoprire che tutti i nostri sforzi sono diventati le ali in grado di portarci al Cielo.

Heaven, the heavens or seven heavens, is a common religious, cosmological, or transcendent place where heavenly beings such as gods, angels, jinn, saints, or venerated ancestors originate, are enthroned, or live. It is commonly believed that heavenly beings can descend to earth or incarnate and that earthly beings can ascend to Heaven in the afterlife or in exceptional cases, enter Heaven alive.

Heaven is often described as a "higher place", the holiest place, a Paradise, in contrast to Hell or the Underworld or the "low places", and universally or conditionally accessible by earthly beings according to various standards of divinity, goodness,piety, faith, or other virtues or right beliefs or simply the will of God. Some believe in the possibility of a Heaven on Earth in aWorld to Come.

Heav·en collects through a selection of videos representations of "sky" from artists with different backgrounds, religions, and nationalities.

Skies that are only the background of everyday life’s moments, made immortal by camera shots, overlapped hundreds of times as to define the pace of the pragmatic, individual evolution of the author of ‘1981-2001’. Here the sky isn’t an extraordinary entity to ascend to, but the orderly harmonic complement of the quotidian.

As in Teppei Koseki’s video, the main topic of ‘The fall’ is the individual growth. The protagonist mutates in surreal, oneiric, grotesque ways. The God Hand/deus ex machina ignites a chain of events that culminates in a cynical epilogue. None of the characters seem able to avoid the wry ending, despite their resolves.

‘Another day in paradise’ describes in an intimate, and delicately domestic way the conquest of new, Martian horizons. The description of the new pioneers and their training is juxtaposed to the simplicity of the gestures of the Days of Heaven.

The Earthly Paradise (or Hell on Earth, the author leaves the choice to us) is depicted with consumerist, and impersonal 3d graphic in ‘Song of Joy’. The Land of Toys demands to its visitors an epic crossing of the sea. The reward for such an endeavour is an eternity of distorted fun in total anonymity.

If the white collars of Tian Xiaolei seem to find solace in a twisted romantic ending (literally), the passengers of Ronci’s ‘Escalator’ seem to be doomed to a destiny of unawareness. The travellers are portrayed powerless, immobile, but in motion. The Escalator appears to reward or punish with ascending or descending motion, people of any background, gender, and age. The stair becomes inescapable fate, destined to endless repetition in its multiple refractions. The passengers, like jellyfish caught in strong currents, can’t change the direction taken. The passengers can’t even notice to be trapped on a fixed-rail.

The escalator is a Random Final Judgment that narrates stories of slot-machine icons’ Eternal returns.

Hexagram 23, Splitting Apart – I Ching. In Xiaodi’s video the natural entropy of the earthly things is compensated by the supernatural: monks in ceremonial dress; a Golgotha of incenses; statuettes of Buddha; “God’s mercy”, as it’s written behind the dove in the opening scene.

The earthly prisons are transcended by the Taoist and Buddhist faiths. The human, the animal, and the universe are sublimated into the divine, and in their congenital, polymorph immanence.

“Deus sive Natura”. We are surrounded by God. Chemical reactions, seen with the right gaze and underlined by intermittent chamber music, become transcendental marvels in ‘The eve’.

‘The sign’ portrays abstract nightscapes, lunar phases, fluctuating light sources.

The dark sky pulsates of sounds: buzzing of powerhouses, space travels, cosmic currents.

The sign, white on black, becomes intimate, extra-terrestrial promise of other different from us beyond the heaven’s vault.

The exhibition is a survey of contemporary spirituality. The "sky" is a unifying bond that transcends national and cultural borders.

Heav·en is a circular story where the videos succeed one another in a predefined sequence.

The church is the ideal, historicizing frame for Heav·en. The church is "God's house" on earth, the home of a God who dwells in the skies. The church is therefore sky on earth. And, as if that wasn't enough, its towers points with secular constancy to the vastness of the upper heavens describing the simple and rewarding vertical path that a faithful believer must follow.

Furthermore, the church celebrates its full triple function of theological sky, architectural connection to heaven, and physical representation of sky, through the frescoes that have been decorating its ceilings for centuries.

The exhibition, referring to the tradition of “frescoed heavens” capable to make concrete the thoughts and prayers of generations of faithful, proposes new and contemporary visions of the celestial.

Heaven is Heaven

What is Heaven? The sky above us? The paradise of our after life? Is it the Utopia we will never reach? Or is it our dream? As a thousand readers have a thousand hamlet，everyone has their own Heaven. No matter good or bad, heaven is just a place for me to rest my soul. And for the artists, it becomes a world they create. Different artists imagined and created different Heavens.

Heaven is a Consumer Society

There is a holy song in the background, and the men are running towards the island of Cythera. The video is full of 3D model fireworks, the amusement park, colorful lights, laughter by men and women, amusement facilities made of human bodies. The human figure in the video are all men with short hair, in black suits, have no eyes, and are all look the same. In this fake world, all the things seems unreal and strange, such as the skeletons, men with numerous arms and legs, diamond flowers made of women bodies, and there is even a man throwing up golden things. The weight of a golden Chinese stone lion and Jeff Koon’s Dog almost makes a man collapse. In the end, the kiss between a couple reminds me the sculpture of Rodin. The gesture of kissing never changed, what changed is the love. It seems love in the consumer society becomes distorted. The Heaven Tian Xiaolei created in his video work Song of Joy, is a consumer society, in which resources, time and human feelings are wasted and destroyed. The sound of thunder is trying to wake us up from the fake happiness made of consumption. It is a Heaven that we need to get away, and only in this way you can find yourself again.

Heaven is the Reality where You Have Freedom

In the beginning of Zhang Xiaodi’s Po Hexagram, two red candles are burning, and then a image of Hexagram(I-Ching) appears. Then the camera recorded a bird standing on a light, and there is a plague with Chinese characters” Tian En”(The mercy of god) in the background. Suddenly the sound of drum began with singing of some Taoist priests. In this video work, the artist made collage of different images from reality together into montage. There are religious objects, such as a group of Taoist priests, the incenses in the temple, figure of Buddha, jade mask and so on. And there are animals as birds, peacock, two fighting goats, bear in a cage, zebra, camel and so on. What’s interesting is the artist blend all those things together. If you pay special attention, you will notice the animals except the birds are all captured in a cage or inside the fence. It illustrates that the birds with wings have freedom to fly into the sky and can reach the Heaven, but the animals without wings are limited on the ground and have no freedom at all. Here comes the wind, through the forests, a door, and a window. It is the wind that set us free in reality and then you will find Heaven with freedom.

Heaven is Where You Get Up

In this video work The Fall, Ding Ning painted every image. In the beginning, a hand of god put a white chair onto a red chair, then put on the chair a blue man and a pink woman model both without arms, and a white child model with only one leg and no arms at all. Suddenly all the things were falling down. The white figure fell into the hole of the building model and broke into pieces. But at the bottom, it revived. The building is like a Babel where human beings always want to get closer to Heaven. It is also a Bantham’s Panopticon,where the child is like a prisoner arranged in a ring of cells, surrounding their guard parents, who are concealed on the top center. While the child is doing whatever he can to go up the stairs, the parent figures are peering and want to keep him under control desperately. When the stairs are gone, the child even forced himself grow a pair of butterfly wings. In order to stop the child, get out of the building, the woman figure cried and the tears flooded in the building and drown the child, which remind me of the Deluge Myth that Noah struggled to survive. Even eaten by the flower grew from the hand of god, the child became part of it and broke all the limits. What the little white figure want to tell us is keep trying, and then in the end you will find that all your endeavor will become the wings that can take you to your Heaven.
